Helping Haiti With Hope - Why We Are Reaching Out to Haiti Outreach Program

February 3rd, 2010 by JulieApple

I think this happens to all of us when we watch about a disaster on the news.  I know it happens to me.  As I watched the story of the Haitian earthquake unfold, I had an out-of-body experience in sadness.  It was hard for me to ignore my warm and comfortable surroundings and the buoyant movements of my three healthy and happy children.  I was grateful and became aware of how grateful I should be every day.  It is hard respond to a disaster of these proportions meaningfully. I quietly made my personal donations, and was grateful that I have the means to do that, still it seemed inadequate when there is so much suffering in a place that has sustained hope for so long against harsh odds. Haiti needs so much love.  It needs people to actively hope for a meaningful future.  I realized with disaster there is a chance for healing, rebirth, creativity, and a future if people respond with hope.

I am fortunate to have ideas as a designer and I am even more fortunate to work with skilled people in the US and in the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispanola with Haiti.  I realized that, while I am not a doctor, an engineer, a nurse, or an electrician, I can help. I can take the bags that people of Hispanola have made on one side of the island and use them to heal the people on the other side of the island in Haiti.  To do this I need a community of hopeful people who want to heal and rebuild Haiti.  The people of Haiti are resourceful.  They can make a little generosity go a long way.  We are donating to the medical fund of the Haiti Outreach Program.  This organization is all volunteer based, so all donations go 100% to Haiti - $0 go to “overhead.” When I say they are resourceful I want you to understand that Haiti Outreach Program can feed, educate, and clothe a child for $100 a year.  It is this kind of generosity, resourcefulness, and hope that can heal Haiti so Haitians can enjoy the fruits of their own labor.
